WEEKLY COLLECTIONS

  • *Double bag food waste such as meat and bones. This will help to reduce the smell and stop the flies laying eggs on the food. Squeezing the air out of the bags before tying also helps.

  • *Rinse polystyrene food trays, yoghurt pots and other food packaging that cannot be recycled.

  • *Rinse your bin out regularly and keep it clean.
  • *If possible, store the bin away from direct sunlight.
  • *Keep the lid shut. If it's broken or will not shut properly, please call 01442 867858 to arrange a repair.
  • *Recycle as much as possible so that general refuse is minimised and the bin lid remains shut.
  • *Hang an insecticidal strip inside your bin.
  • *If nappies are included in your waste, double bag these or consider using traditional towelling nappies.

*Don't store food waste and un-rinsed food containers in your kitchen bin. Empty it as soon as possible and seal the bin-liner before placing in your black or green wheelie bin.

*Always keep food covered. Bag and bin waste straight away.

*Don't leave dog or cat food out uncovered.

Finally... if you do get maggots...

*The only effective way to get rid of them is to remove them along with the contents of the bin.

*Pour hot soapy solution over the contents.

*After the bin has been emptied, clean and disinfect it well.

*Spray your bin with fly killer.

  • Did you know...
  • *50 acres of rainforest are destroyed every minute.

  • *More than one billion trees are used to make disposable nappies every year.

What can YOU do to help?

It's a big statement and a tall order.
What do most people feel when they hear it. Guilt? A sense of inadequacy or hopelessness? People want to make things better, but no one feels motivated to do something that simply makes things less bad. They need a positive vision.
People never want to live with less, but are prepared to live differently if they believe it will bring positive benefits.
People want personal gain. This does not have to be financial. It could be an improvement in health, happiness or status.
Maybe we should rethink our aims and expectations. No one person can 'save the planet' - that's obvious - yet it's easy to slip into a sense of 'I'm not going to make any difference in the grand scheme of things', and then give up trying altogether.
In terms of the history of our Earth, we have plundered most of it's rich resources in the blink of an eye. We have done this in the name of progress, and yet there is a price to pay which is rapidly becoming due.
We each need to grasp our portion of responsibility for the sake of our children and theirs.
No one knows if the tide can ever be turned or for how long, but by making small changes to our everyday lives we can make a difference and at least say that we tried.

*About 90% of the energy used in lighting a standard (incandescent) light bulb is lost as heat.

*Air conditioning uses 10 times more energy than a fan.

*Making a new can from scratch uses the energy equal to half a can of diesel.

*There are about 500 million motors on the planet, burning an average of 2 gallons of fuel every day. Each gallon releases 20 pounds of carbon dioxide into the air.

On average each donated handset is worth £5 and each toner cartridge £1.
It may not seem like much, but it soon adds up. So go on, help the environment and help Keech Cottage at the same time. Thank you very much.
